Silver Falls School District provides effective digital resources for learning and enters into agreements requiring student data based on the best interest of the child’s learning. Our district uses several web-based services not operated by Silver Falls, but by third parties. In order for our students to use these services, certain personally identifiable information, such as their district username, password, birthdate, district identification number, etc., must be provided to web site operators. Under a federal law entitled the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) these websites must obtain parental consent before collecting personal information from children. The law permits school districts to consent to the collection of personal information on behalf of all of its students, thereby eliminating the need for individual parental consent to be given directly to the web site operator. Regardless, we seek your permission by your acknowledgement of the Student Responsible User Agreement during your child’s school enrollment process. A link to the current Student Responsible User Agreement may be found above.

The list includes and identifies approved and unapproved digital resources for students and staff. It is not comprehensive and is continually updated throughout the school year.
Given the large number of online applications, websites, and games in the K12 education space, we do know that there are online sites in use and/or purchased by schools, educators, and school parent teacher groups that have not been vetted through the district’s review and contract process. As a result, these are not district-approved tools. In these cases, we work with school leaders and educators to inform them about the importance of student data privacy and the district’s requirements that only district-approved digital resources be used with our students for their safety and protection and guide schools and educators to the approved digital resources that they can utilize with students. We know that there are some excellent, and often free, educational products out there for students. However, we also need to ensure that we are in compliance with the required protections for our students.
Silver Falls School District thanks SFUSD and Woodburn SD for the use of their Student Data Privacy language.
