Save the Date!
What: An Earth Day Community Oak Planting
Where: Mark Twain Elementary School Oak Grove
When: Saturday, April 24th, from 9 to 11 am
As part of the restoration efforts at the Mark Twain Oak Grove (more details below!), and in honor of Earth Day, we’ve purchased 300 Oregon White Oak seedlings. In partnership with a local arborist, we’re holding a community planting event this Saturday. We invite you to attend and help us put these young Oaks into the ground.
Note that masks and social distancing will be required on school grounds, and we encourage you to bring your own tools. All of the following would be helpful:
- Gloves (highly recommended!)
- Shovels/Pickaxes (the ground is pretty hard right now)
- Buckets (for potentially carrying water)
Also, please bear in mind that parking is extremely limited – we encourage you to consider walking, cycling, or carpooling!
Oak Grove Project Update
As mentioned above, this planting is just one of many steps in the process of revitalizing and restoring the Mark Twain Oak Grove. We’ve partnered with the City of Silverton, Marion County Soil & Water Conservation District, and the US Fish & Wildlife Service, and we’re working closely with a local arborist.
On the advice of the experts, grove clean-up has been completed. Stumps were ground, soil leveled off; and the grove has been hydro-seeded. Additionally, many of the logs removed from the site have now been returned.
This summer, we plan to hold a listening session for the entire community to come together and discuss their desires for what the revitalized grove might look like. We’re heavily invested in providing learning opportunities for our students as part of this process – SHS Career & Technical Education students will be building permanent outdoor furniture and fixtures for the grove from some of the Oak logs, students from SHS courses and clubs will participate in planting, and elementary school students will be able to use the space to learn about indigenous plants and animals.
Finally, we will have some additional announcements coming soon regarding planting of trees in other locations around town. Stay tuned for more details, and we hope you’ll join us this Saturday for an Earth Day Celebration and Grove Planting!
