Good afternoon, Silver Falls Families.

So, here we are on the final Friday before the first day of school. I am as anxious and excited for this Monday as you are!  Every member of the Silver Falls Family has spent weeks or months preparing for the return of students to school. While this year’s first day will look so unique compared to every other, we have still prepared virtual classrooms that we believe will be welcoming and inclusive.

With that said, of course we know from the recent experiences of other school districts that technology can indeed fail.  With this in mind, I want to assure you that our IT, Communications, and Teaching & Learning teams continue to work tirelessly, and around the clock, to support the effectiveness of our virtual classrooms.  Just two days ago, in fact, I met with our school principals to discuss contingency plans just in case.

Please know that our schools have backup plans in place in the event of technology hiccups, and we believe we’re as ready as we can be. In the event you, or your child(ren), are affected by any sort of downtime in the coming week, we ask only for your patience and grace as we work through those issues together.  After all, this is still brand new territory for all of us.

Wednesday evening, we co-hosted Silverton Strong – a virtual support event providing families and community members with resources to support students after the recent wildfires. For those who weren’t able to attend, or who would like to see the event again the video is available here.

I would also like to highlight a message sent out earlier this week that included schedules of activities for all schools and grade levels around the district. You can find that message on ParentSquare, and also here on the district website. I encourage you to take a look at this document at your earliest convenience.  Our hope is that this will help you to effectively plan your family’s schedule for the coming week.

Finally, I want to acknowledge, in no uncertain terms, that this year is not the one we would have chosen for our students if any of us had the choice. So many of our employees, including me, are also parents; and like you, we all wish we could bring our students back to physical classrooms immediately.

On behalf of the entire SFSD staff, we are honored and privileged to serve you, and the greater Silver Falls community.  Please reach out to us if we can support you in any way.

Sincerely,
